Are BJJ chokes dangerous?

Chokes are one of the most common kind of submission holds in Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ), which is recognized for emphasizing ground combat and submission grips. However, are BJJ chokes harmful?

Chokes, often referred to as air chokes or blood chokes, function by cutting off the opponent's opponent's air or blood supply to the brain, rendering them unconscious. While chokes may be useful in both athletic and self-defence scenarios, it's crucial to be aware of the possible downsides.

The possibility of spinal cord and neck injuries is one of the major dangers associated with chokes. Chokes can result in significant harm or even death if used incorrectly or with excessive power. Because of this, it's crucial to correctly learn and practice chokes under the supervision of a trained teacher.

In conclusion, improper application of a BJJ choke can be harmful. It's critical to understand the possible hazards involved with employing chokes and to study and practice them under the supervision of a certified teacher. It's also important to be mindful of your partner's needs at all times and to leave if you start to feel uncomfortable. Safety must come first, as it does with any combat art.
